Electric Rotary Cutter Tips & Tricks

Electric Rotary Cutter Tips & Tricks

Since I have posted a few videos using an electric rotary cutter, I have had several people with questions! It's much easier to answer those here, so let's get straight to it!

The most asked question I have received is... Where did you get that?!

Here is a direct link to Amazon! My blade cover is a different color, but the exact one I have is no longer listed. This is essentially the same one with a different brand stamped on the side! This machine has sped up the cutting process for us SO much!!

Other questions I've received:

What type of weights are you using? How do you keep fabric from sliding? How many layers do you cut? Are you scared of that thing? (Ha!! I was at first, but we're friends now!)

Below are all the answers and a few tips for working with this giant cutting tool!

You'll want to invest in the 4 pound weight below as well as several other small ones. You can make them, use soup cans, use heavy magnets, etc.

This big one is the BEST! It's around $20 but well worth the price!!

The electric rotary cutter has a fan, so pattern pieces often get blown around. You'll want plenty of weights to keep your pieces still as well as to keep your layers of fabric from shifting.

Additionally, fabric clips are your friend! You can clip the outer edges of fabric, clip up fabric layers as you move them out of the way, clip layers together once they are cut, etc.

I love these long ones when working with so many layers at once!

I tend to layer 3-4 layers of my main fabric (normally a shiny milliskin or print) along with the same amount of lining. I layer fabric flat instead of on the fold when using the electric rotary. This means I cut 6-8 layers at one time. It's SO much more efficient when I need multiple sets of dancewear or costumes in the same size!! *The rotary can cut many more layers, but this is what I have found works best when I am using stretchy fabrics!*

I layer all of my fabric then cut as many pieces as I can without moving it. I can normally cut 2-3 sizes of briefs or tops before I have to re-layer everything. (Blessed with a large cutting space!) Again... such a time saver!

Hopefully these tips will help you become more efficient in your sewing!
